PlayStation Announces Departure From Kojima’s PHYSINT While Xbox Confirms Collaboration
In a strange turn of events, PlayStation has announced that it will no longer be publishing Hideo Kojima’s upcoming Physint project, and at the same time, Microsoft has confirmed it will be picking up the publishing rights instead.
The whole debacle has left social media confused as to why it all happened at once, but Variety reports the situation was already rocky between Kojima and PlayStation back in June. In a report, Variety says that PlayStation Studios already dropped Kojima in June and its latest statement was just confirming the split. It reads:
“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima’s vision for the game. Our relationship remains strong after three decades of industry-leading, genre-defining creative cooperation, and we look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future.”
The studio owner himself released a statement on X saying that PlayStation Studios unexpectedly told him they were cancelling the project. He says:
“As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project,” Kojima wrote. “PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward.”
However, Hideo Kojima says he was still determined to keep the project alive and has been searching for a new publishing partner for the last three months to help collaborate on Physint. Xbox is that partner.
News of Kojima’s partnership with Xbox comes amid mounting discourse online regarding PlayStation’s all-digital future, while Xbox is focusing on bolstering its footprint in Asian markets. So perhaps this partnership is the best thing to happen for them.
Kojima’s Physint is being described as the next revival of the Metal Gear Solid series as its tactical espionage gameplay is expected to take fans back to the days of Solid Snake. We recently got a glimpse of the game earlier this year and it definitely rings true.
