Steam Machine Engineers Warn RAM Crisis Will Only Get Worse
As the ongoing global memory shortage crisis (or RAMageddon) continues to impact the tech industry across the board, Steam Machine engineers are now warning consumers that the RAM crisis will only get worse from here.
Buyers are currently facing exorbitant prices for RAM and tech today, drastically affecting the pricing of newer tech like the Steam Machine and other products on the market. Yazan Aldehayyat and Pierre-Loup Griffais, two engineers who helped bring the Steam Machine to life, explained to Bloomberg that the memory shortage problem hasn’t loosened up. In fact, it’s still getting worse.
“Honestly, it’s still getting worse,” said Aldehayyat. “Just in case people are not aware. What people are seeing on retail shelves right now, from our observations, is lagging what we’re seeing from a bulk supply by at least three to six months.”
Aldehayyat explained that Valve had expected to run into some problems when the Steam Machine was announced in November 2025 but the company wasn’t prepared for how bad it would really get. “We knew there was going to be an issue with sourcing,” Aldehayyat added. “But the extent was beyond anything we actually expected.”
The future is looking pretty bleak at the moment and it’s not a good sign for consumers. Thanks to the boom in AI by companies, the world is facing surging costs and limited supplies of memory across the globe. It’s a dire situation that’s not only impacted the gaming industry but the tech market at large. As it stands, players are bracing for next-gen consoles like the PS6 and Xbox Project Helix to breach the $1,000 mark at launch, if the Steam Machine’s maligned pricing is an early red flag.
Meanwhile, Valve hasn’t released any official sales figures for the Steam Machine yet but we can’t imagine it’s selling as well as the company hoped, especially in a competitive PC market where rivals can easily build setups that rival the Steam Machine at a lower price point.
