Lenovo’s $99 280Hz Gaming Monitor Targets Gamers With Tight Budgets
Lenovo is releasing a budget-friendly gaming monitor that packs in 280Hz at only $99 (yes, it’s even cheaper than GTA 6’s Ultimate Edition). Judging by the price tag, the monitor is specifically targeting gamers with tight budgets and light pockets, yet it still hits that sweet spot for smooth visuals. Lenovo always thinks outside of the box when it comes to its gaming monitors and this time, it’s no different.
The Lenovo Legion 24-1r will cost 669 yuan, equivalent to $99, yet offers a 23.8-inch IPS panel running at up to 280Hz. Another 27-inch model with the same specifications will cost roughly $116, which is honestly insane considering most gaming monitors offering over 240Hz at that size can cost a pretty penny these days. Capped at a 1080p resolution, the smoother refresh rate should ensure solid performance for competitive multiplayer games like Valorant, Counter-Strike 2, and Rainbow Six Siege.
The thinking behind the Legion 24-1r is that the lower resolution will place less strain on the graphics card, thus allowing them to hit those higher frame rates that make use of the faster panel. Lenovo also claims it has a response time as low as 0.5ms MPRT, while AMD FreeSync Premium and VESA Adaptive-Sync assist in keeping the gameplay smooth and prevents the frame rate from fluctuating too much.
There are a couple of setbacks worth mentioning. For Lenovo to hit that price, a DisplayPort will be needed to hit 280Hz while the two available HDMI connections hit 240Hz. It’s also Full HD, meaning visuals will probably look decent on the 23.8-inch model but may result in some fuzziness on the larger 27-inch panel. With 400-nit brightness, 1000:1 contrast ratio, and lack of DisplayHDR certification, you probably won’t be able to squeeze all the HDR benefits out of this gaming monitor.
For the time being, Lenovo has yet to announce a global rollout and when it will become available but we’ll provide an update as soon as we hear information about local South African availability.
